Derek Paxman, Head of Facilities Management - University of the Arts London

Qualified as a construction quantity surveyor then became a project manager and after 16 years in the construction industry moved into facilities management in 1981 when I joined the BP Group for 10 years.

At BP, I managed multi-site, multi-million pound budgets for building maintenance, housekeeping, space planning, property and security operations - in fact every aspect of FM.

I co-founded the Centre for Facilities Consultancy in 1992 and worked as a top consultant in public and private sector organisations including the National Audit Office and The Boots Company on projects ranging from full re-structures to re-tendering of services. I have worked at the centre of the FM sector for many years and was Chairman of the British Institute of Facilities Management from 1995 – 97, apart from other roles in EuroFM, Action FM and industry think tanks. I am an Associate of the Institute of Building and an Honorary Fellow of BIFM.

A WORD OF ADVICE:

Communicate well with senior management and demonstrate the value of FM to the financial bottom line.

A LITTLE KNOWN FACT:

I am a Freeman of the City of London.
